Life in the Laundromat

The American laundry is an interesting meeting place where people spend hours waiting for their clothes to be washed. The first self-service laundry was opened in Texas in 1924, and since then 35-40 thousand laundries have opened all over the US. Each laundry features 40-50 washing machines, 20-30 spin driers, change and drink machines, some of them have televisions even, and playgrounds for children. According to a survey not only women, but every fifth man, too, cleans his clothes in a laundry. (1995)
